Tourism is top priority for Morocco says King Mohammed VI

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has reaffirmed his strong commitment to tourism as one of Morocco’s top national priorities. In a meeting attended by UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, on the occasion of the 10th Tourism Convention Day, the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism set the stage for the official launch of Morocco’s ‘Tourism Development Strategy Vision 2020’ (Marrakesh, Morocco, 30 November).

In 2001, King Mohammed VI announced a new national tourism strategy for Morocco, ‘Vision 2010’, a long-term programme to trigger the sustainable and accelerated development of tourism. Since then, thanks to a range of strong tourism policies and actions including a well-structured product development strategy, the liberalization of air transport and increased promotional efforts, international tourism to Morocco has increased significantly.

International tourist arrivals grew almost two-fold in less than a decade and are expected to reach 9.3 million in 2010, while earnings from international tourism, a key export in the country, tripled in the same period. Moreover, in 2009, a challenging year for the tourism sector worldwide given the adverse global economic conditions, Morocco, as one of North Africa’s leading tourism destinations, was among the world’s top performers with arrivals up by 6%.

JESS Kalinowsky has been to Morocco, from top to bottom and back again!

Come experience the FOOD! and the Culture of this wonderful North Africa nation!

JESS Kalinowsky says  ” You cannot buy experience but you can buy from the people that have experience ”

Steeped in history, Marrakech with its rose-coloured ramparts and thousand year old palm groves casts a magic spell. This is very much an Imperial city where even today Berbers and Arabs mingle with nomads and mountain tribes. Your tour will include a visit to the beautiful Menara Gardens, the Old Medina, and a close view of the famous Koutoubia Minaret; the Bahia Palace with its lush Moorish-style Gardens dates from the reign of Moulay al-Hassan, when it was built as the residence of the grand vizier, Sidi Ahmed Ben Moussa, and the nearby Palais Dar Si Said which is the Museum of Moroccan Arts and finally the Saadien Tombs. Return to your hotel in Agadir by 9.00pm.
  5. Essaouira Excursion – Depart from your hotel at 7.00am for a full day excursion.
Travel north from Agadir to the coastal town of Essaouira. Founded by the Phoenicians, its most enduring influence came from the Portuguese, giving this walled town its 18th Century look with whitewashed buildings with blue shutters. Popular as a seaside resort, it has a lovely harbour and the Medina is well known for its many wood carvers.
Return to your hotel in Agadir by 6.30pm. The evening is at leisure.
  6. Taroudant and Tiout Excursion – Depart from your hotel at 8.00am for a full day excursion. To the east of Agadir, visit the palm groves of Tiout with its stone built Kasbah, one of the largest in Southern Morocco. You will also tour this area riding a donkey. Spend the afternoon in Taroudant, a very old Saadian capital and one of the oldest fortified cities in Morocco. Here, you see the Pasha’s Palace as well as the Kasbah and visit the souks (markets) where craftsmen work with wood, copper and silver. Return to your hotel in Agadir by 5.30pm. The evening is at leisure.

The Imperial City

Morocco is a North African coastal country about the size of California. The geography of the country includes a great expanse of Atlantic coastline as well as desert, mountains and plains. The scenery of Morocco is a blend of the African continent, while its monuments reflect the rich and varied traditions of the Islamic civilization that began its influence in the year 710.

Morocco is bounded by two seas, the Atlas mountain chain, and the immensity of the Sahara Desert, yet it is Europe’s nearest neighbour and the mostaccessible of the Maghreb countries to visit.

Morocco presents a wonderful variety of geological wonders. The countryside is beautiful, running along both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. Just eight miles from Spain, Morocco might have lost its soul to Europe – but refused. Though conquered by Rome and colonised by Spain and France, Moroccans held fast to their Berber culture, while adopting the Islam religion brought by the Arabs from the East. Morocco is an ancient country moulded by history. As a result of its unique geographical position, Morocco has been exposed to the religious, artistic and economic cross currents of the East, Europe and the depths of Africa. Many countries have, at various times, attempted to take over Morocco for their own interests. There is so much more to Morocco than words can tell, so let’s begin our journey…
